Worlds largest live camera – Aware-II Gigapixel Cameras

Micro Technology ServicesWorlds largest live camera – Aware-II Gigapixel Cameras

This is an image of a gigapixel camera developed for DARPA’s Advanced Wide FOV Architectures for Image Reconstruction and Exploitation (AWARE) program.  MTSI designed the gate arrays, the electronics and camera system, along with the CPU and ASIC designs.   The program was run by Duke University as part of a $25 million program from DARPA.

The camera assembly is unusual in that the camera has to hide behind the sensor.  I a megapixel CCD soldered to a custom 3-D PCB, and 3 fine-pitch PCBs are soldered to the 3D assembly.  After assembly asd test, a small micro-motor is added for focusing.

The camera is a fly-eye lens with hundreds of cameras, totaling as much as 30 to 50 giga-pixels.   It operates at 15 FPS, in full color.
