Electronics for the Science to Stay Healthy in Space

MTSI boards orbited the earth inside the International Space Station

The MTSI manufacturing department built the electronic portion of the Krug Life Sciences platform for use on the International Space Station — then known as the ISSA. The two circuit cards and electronic circuits provided the digital and analog data collection interface to service medical experiments onboard the space station.

Flying into space is physically grueling and there’s still a lot we don’t know about staying healthy in the heavens. Astronauts experience physiological changes when exposed to the microgravity of space. Understanding these changes by conducting experiments with unique technology helps NASA mitigate negative effects, improve crew health, and prepare for the future of long-duration space missions.

Once in space, the experiment was plugged into the space station. The flight-qualified system was equipped to send data to and from the experiment regarding four different gases, several power supplies — and video, digital and analog signals. The experiment could also be remotely controlled on the ground by the mission principal investigator on the ground in real time without delays or taking any mission specialists’ time.

MTSI is honored to have partnered with the firms that ensure mission success.
